Europa isthe smallest of the fourlargest moonsorbitingJupiter that were discovered by Galileo in 1610. It is also the sixth-closest to the planet of allthe 79 known moons of Jupiter, as well asthesixth-largest moonin ourSolar System.
Slightly smaller thanEarth’s Moon, Europa is primarily made ofsilicaterock and has a water-ice crustand probably anironnickelcore. It has a very thin atmosphere, composed primarily of oxygen. Its surface isstriatedby cracks and streaks, but craters are relatively few. In addition to Earth-bound telescope observations, Europa has been examined by a succession of space-probe flybys, the first occurring in the early 1970s.
TheGalileomission, launched in 1989, provides the bulk of current data on Europa. No spacecraft has yet landed on Europa, although there have been several proposed exploration missions.
